The Tholakele Project was started by Bronwen Clacherty, a percussionist, singer and indigenous South African instrumentalist from Johannesburg. She started the project by workshopping music with a maskanda band and writing her own music based on isiXhosa and Shona songs. This became the album Uyandibiza (2011). She continued to compose and rework her performance as a solo project and with many other musicians and recorded an EP Ngqo Ngqo Ngqo (2014). This year Bronwen was joined by Mikhaela Kruger, a jazz singer and pianist from Cape Town. Together Bronwen and Mikhaela reworked the music of the project to make it an exciting stage show of afro-folk groove music. They perform as a duo and with a band.
